1st Grade Arithmetic
- Pass out chalkboards, chalk and cloth erasers.
- Have students write to 100 by 5's within 1 minute.
- Then count aloud to 100.
- Have students write to 50 by 2's.
- Show work and count aloud.
- Have students write from 95 to 120 by 1's.
1. A farmer has 14 cows, 7 hens, 3 pigs and 2 horses. How many animals does he have in all? Have students show answer on their slate. also notice the strategy they used to solve the problem. Discuss different strategies used.
2. Susie has to feed the chickens at 7:00. It takes her 1/2 hours. What time will it be when she is finished? Draw a clock to show your answer.
3. Sam earns 5 cents every day for helping to milk the cows. How much will he earn in 1 week?
4. Joan is helping her mother can tomatoes. Monday they canned 5 quarts. Tuesday they canned 7 quarts. Wednesday they canned 3 quarts. How many quarts of tomatoes did they can? (There is a quart jar of tomatoes on the shelf in the cloakroom to show the children. The schoolmarm can also talk about preserving foods in this way.)
5. When they were putting the quarts of tomatoes away in the cellar (explain the word cellar) they dropped 2. How many quarts of tomatoes did they still have?
6. If you have time you might want to have a mini lesson on Roman Numerals. The chapters in the McGuffey Readers use Roman Numerals so it is a good extension activity.

This is probably far enough for 1st graders. Have them write Roman Numerals for several numbers. Explain that if "I" is in front of V or X you subtract and that if "I" follows you add. Examples: XIII = 13
VII = 7
IV = 4
IX = 9
III = 3
XIX = 19
