Drinking from the Water Crock

Picture
Select a girl from the class and act out the following story.

One morning little Susie didn't feel well. She told her mother she was hot and didn't think she could go to school. After feeling her head her mother said that she was fine and would have to go to school. Besides she was busy with washing to do and weeding to get done in the garden. So Susie went to school even though she really didn't feel good. She managed to get some work done that morning. After a while she asker her teacher if she could get a drink of water.

"Sure, Susie, help yourself," the teacher replied. So Susie went to the water crock and took a long drink of water. "That was so good," she said. "I think I will have some more," she said as she dipped another ladle of cool water from the crock.

But she couldn't finish that ladle of water so she poured it back into the crock.

At the end of the school day she was so hot and tired that she couldn't even run home. She just walked slowly and when she got home she asked her mother if she could go to bed.

"Susie! You must not feel good if you want to go to bed now instead of playing!" She felt her head and inspected her arms and chest.

"Oh no! I believe you must have the measles! I'm so sorry that I sent you to school this morning."

Yes, Susie had the measles and several days later many other children in her classroom also got the measles.

Ask the students how they think the other students got the measles. Explain little was known about contagious diseases. Later students were given cups of their own to drink from.
