Nurse Maude

Picture
Nurse Maude is a Red Cross nurse who visits Cornell School to discuss health and personal hygiene issues from the early 1900's. She wears a white apron that has a large Red Cross sewn onto the front of her apron. Her props include a washtub and washboard, as well as a pitcher and bowl.  Her presentation includes the following:
  • How to make soap
  • Using the washtub to take a bath (Students are told they get into the tub to test it out.)
  • Hair Care Tips (washing every month and brushing hair 100 strokes)
  • Diseases of the time
  • Washing clothes
  • Treating Headaches (Put a magnet on a string around your head)
  • Reasons why 30% of children often died early
