Sometimes you will see the phrase “the three Rs” when referring to subjects taught in a one-room school.  Each subject would be started with an "R" and be pronounced as “reading, ‘riting, and ‘rithmetic.”

In addition to the "three R's, the teacher might also teach history, grammar, speaking, spelling, geography, hygiene, and agriculture.
