Reading Lessons at Cornell School

At Cornell School there are sets of McGuffey Readers in the bookcase by the windows. Use stories of your choice. One story is enough for a group. You may find a word that is now rather obsolete and you will need to explain the meaning. (Our English language is always adding and dropping words for common use as it is a living language.)
What McGuffey book to use? These books are not at grade level. They are a progress level. However, it was found that the 2nd Reader is good for the second grade and so on. There are 7 Reader books, one being a primer. The 6th Reader is more like high school material and most pupils never got that far. It was said that if a student finished the 6th Reader, it could be used as a recommendation toward proficiency. Children should stand and read aloud when it is each pupil's turn. Use the Recitation Bench that is located along the wall at Cornell School. Small groups are best. William McGuffey chose stories that impart values for the most part and the children should briefly talk about that. The Readers usually contained prose on subjects like ethics and morals, God, death, history, animals, and education. |
