Teaching Aids
Chalks, blackboards and possibly a world globe were used by schoolmarms/masters as their standard teaching aids. Of course books, in particular McGuffey Readers, formed the traditional or conventional resources available to both the teachers and learners.
Another type of teaching aid is featured on this webpage and can be found at Cornell School in Johnstown, OH and Great Western Schoolhouse in St. Clairsville, OH. Both schools are the caretakers of a unique teaching aid. This aid is enclosed in a wooden case and contains multiple charts that cover curriculum lessons from the late 1880's. The first chart in the images below features an Introductory list that details lessons that cover phonics, penmanship, drawing and arithmetic. It is assumed this teaching aid was used by Ohio one-room schools since Ohio is often referenced in the chart titles.
Research about this 19th century teaching aid is scarce. If anyone has further information about such items, please contact us at: [email protected]
